Let Us Introduce Ourselves
Welcome to this information resource about the little-known 18th century English naturalist and artist Mark Catesby. After visiting the New World twice, and starting to publish in 1729, Catesby took eighteen years to finish the first fully illustrated study of North American flora and fauna.

To find out why the Catesby Commemorative Trust was formed and why it commissioned a film about Catesby, we invite you to explore our site.

IN 2012 IT WILL BE THREE CENTURIES SINCE MARK CATESBY FIRST ARRIVED IN AMERICA

To recognize this event, and the impact that he had on our world, the trust is organizing a major program of talks by a broad array of speakers from the US and Europe on all aspects of his life, times, work and impact. We are also arranging for displays of his landmark "Natural History of Carolina, Florida & the Bahama Islands", his artwork and plants he drew and described. It will include visits to colonial-era gardens and homes not normally accessible to the public as well as expeditions into areas of South Carolina little changed since Catesby was there.

The program will start on Sunday, November 4 in Richmond, VA and move on first to Washington, DC and then to Charleston, SC, concluding on Friday, November 9, 2012.

Participating organizations include the Smithsonian Institution, the US Botanic Garden Wilton House Museum in Richmond, College of Charleston, Gibbes Museum, Charleston Library Society, Middleton Place Foundation and the Preservation Society of Charleston in addition to the Trust.
